Getting To Zero
Community Participation Towards Eradication 3rd Place Lanardia Robinson Newman's Preparatory Aquired Immuno Deficiency Syndrome or AIDS as it is commonly known is an incurable disease. A number of people have been affected by the global disease. According to UNAIDS Global report 2010 approximately 33.3 million people worldwide are living with AIDS. This disease has cause such heartache, as well as description in everyone's life. AIDS does not affect just the poor but the rich as well. It does not only affect the individual with the disease but the entire communtiy, which means it should be a concern to all. Everyone has to work togethr to eradicate or bring AIDS down to zero infections. How can this happen? Each one teach one. Community members, the AIDS department, government agencies and private businesses can continue to make awareness through various media to educate the un-educated about the disease. We can participate in walk-a-thons to raise money to find a cure. We can put up billboards or posters and have telethons about AIDS. Children can make up jingles, write articles for newspapers and participate in debates about issues relating to AIDS. Organizations like Rap Port and Roteract which attract the young crowd is a great outlet towards positive awareness of this disease. Despite the fact that there still isn't a medical cure for AIDS. We can still work together as a community to get AIDS down to zero infections. When we are aware of how AIDS is transmitted and the effects it has on the effort to get rid of all the stigma and myths associated with it so that people will find it easier to know their status and be better able to help in the fight against AIDS. Let us make this orld a safer place to live in. Educate, eradicate, dont discriminate and allow others to see and feel loved by their family and friends. God has not given us a spirit of fear but of love and a sound mind. Getting To Zero
Community Participation Towards Eradication Chelsea Stubbs B.E.S.T. Institute Several years ago, when US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that it takes a village to raise a child, she was ridiculed by Republicans who believe it only takes a family to raise a child (Source: Ten Things You Cannot Say In America by Larry Elder). Now, we live in a very complex world where everything is interrelated and what happens in one community affects what happens in others. It takes the participation of the entire community to achieve success. AIDS (acquired Immuno-deficiency Syndrome) has devastated many of our communities over the past two decades. Through education, via television, internet, flyers and school visits, the word is out that “AIDS KILLS.” Free condoms, placed in strategic locations, in stores and day to day business places, can help reduce the population of infected persons. Condoms should be free of cost, because many people are struggling to even maintain themselves. The Department of Health and Human Services should take responsibility for ensuring that the easy access condom bowls are restocked on a regular basis. With adequate treatment, mother to child transmission is almost entirely preventable. Some people are afraid to seek treatment because their family might discover their HIV status and abandon them. Being aware the AIDS is spread primarily through exchange of bodily fluids, especially during sexual activity, many people protect themselves through the use of condoms during sex. Others abstain from any sexual behaviour whatsoever. Organizations such as National AIDS Program and Rap Port can be credited with reducing the incidences of AIDS infections. Through education, providing easy access to condoms and convincing government to increase funding for AIDS medications the population of infected persons will decrease. If these efforts continue, we will achieve ultimate victory by putting an end to AIDS infections in he Turks and Caicos Islands by getting to zero. |
